Could you argue that Nebraska flopped into a ‘contract extension’ for Bo Pelini by joining the Big Ten conference? I really don’t know how loyal people are to a conference that they played/cut their coaching teeth in, but if that is true, then what other situation could Bo Pelini want than to be coaching a national powerhouse in his ‘home’ conference — the Big Ten? It may be a stretch, but NU may have just solidified their coach for the next umpteen years if they keep the money and flexibility on par. Just a thought.

What’s all this talk recently about Pelini leaving? He just got here. And he hasn’t won anything yet. Let’s hope NU fans still want him around in three to five years.

Hi Tom, not really a question, but I couldn't believe how your first major league baseball game might have been exactly the same games that my brother took me to see in 1965. I was born and raised in Omaha, in 1965. I was 16 and my older brother lived in Reno and invited me out for a summer visit. While I was there, he took me on a trip to San Francisco and a 3-game series with the Dodgers, one night game and a double header the next day or the day after. Remembering each exact game play-by-play is hard to recall, but I remember Don Drysdale vs. Juan Marichal in one game, Sandy Koufax pitching in another game, and during the series Willie Mays making one of his great catches, and Willie McCovey hitting a home run. To look back and think of all of the Hall of Famers that I saw, I also consider myself lucky being in the right place at the right time, thanks to my brother. Thanks Tom, I enjoy keeping in touch with the Big Red news and your column up here in Alaska all the time. GBR!

I was curious to get your take on the demise of sports columnist Jason Whitlock at the Kansas City Star. He said he's primarily leaving due to a toxic environment within management at the paper, but also argued that having only one paper in a large city restricted the way in which he could cover sports in K.C. Is it possible to stay relevant without an opposing point of view playing “devil's advocate”?

I like Jason. I don't know him well, but when I've run into him, he's been great. Like some columnists, he's not the character he plays in the paper. He's a lot more soft-spoken. Anyway, I don't know the reasons he left, and I'm sure there is more to it than what he announced on the show last week. I'm old school, so I think today's media celebrities need that newspaper anchor or credibility to feed off into other streams such as TV, radio, blogging, etc. I could be wrong on that. I guess we'll find out.

Tom, I am a big fan, but I don't know the fine points of the game such as rotation rules, etc. Is there a book or other source where I could learn?

I'd check the internet or your local book store or library. I don't have any volleyball books, but with three daughters, that might change very soon.

Tom, when am I getting my season tickets? I purchased them through TicketMaster and they said I would have them and a package of goodies in August. I saw on the Nighthawk website that they are coming soon. Do you have any more information?

No. The Nighthawks are your best bet. Good luck!

Tom, not sure if you have driven by the new stadium lately, but have you noticed the extremely plain and boring color of the brick? Who is responsible for picking that style of brick and did they pick it because it was the cheapest? The building from the outside looks more like an old supermarket or run down high school then it does a brand new ballpark. Did they not reference other stadiums like Bricktown in Oklahoma City and the dark red flashy tone? I am shocked the city and taxpayers are paying for this stadium and this is the color we use. It looks awful. I'd be really interested on your thoughts as I know most of all of us that work downtown can't believe how plain and how unmodern it looks. I am really disappointed.

Nobody consulted me on the design, but I'm going to wait until it's finished to weigh in on the bricks.

Tom, which high school football game are you looking forward to? I'm looking forward to the Omaha Central-Creighton Prep game at Rosenblatt. Not only because I am a Central alum, but because of the history of the two programs and the significance of the rivalry.

I'm with you on that one. That will be a very cool night. I haven't looked at the schedule yet, but I will in the next week or two and figure some things out. Do Elkhorn South and Elkhorn High play? That would be another good one to see.

I am not a Husker fan and do not wear rose-tinted glasses, so I think that I am a little more rational about NU's nonconference scheduling. When is NU going to play a legitimate nonconference schedule? I keep hearing that nobody does but USC, Oregon, Virginia Tech, Florida State, Michigan, Washington, Oklahoma and Colorado all seem to find a way. Oklahoma in particular seems to find a way to play a legitimate schedule, and the old arguments about the Huskers being too good and too physical don't apply, so why not schedule a team like OU? Everybody wants home games, but it seems some schools enjoy competing and some schools enjoy winning.

Hang in there. This is the last of the Steve Pederson/Bill Callahan schedules. Nebraska is upgrading beginning next year, and you'll see Wyoming and Fresno and Southern Miss along with Washington, UCLA, Tennessee and Miami. They wanted Boise but Boise wanted $1 million to come to Lincoln. Sorry. No can do.

Tom, have you heard if Omaha is going to attempt to become a player in Big Ten championship events? I suspect the distance from the other Big Ten schools might put Omaha at a disadvantage, but there are several that might draw pretty well like men's and women's basketball, wrestling, swimming, gymnastics etc. If the Big Ten were to have a volleyball tournament to end the season that would be a huge draw.

Big Ten baseball comes immediately to mind. I think that has a chance of happening.

While Nebraska coach Bo Pelini has done a terrific job thus far and has the football program heading in the right direction, his unavailability with the press (Aug. 12 post-practice the latest example) is frustrating for this fan at least. Bo is, by far, the highest paid state employee overseeing a state funded football program. While not all of his salary comes from tax dollars, the additional money he earns wouldn't exist if not for this position. While Bo may say he doesn't owe Husker Nation anything (and I don't know that he has said that), answering questions from the press doesn't seem too much more to ask. Agree?

Bo does just fine with the media. He occasionally treats the experience like a root canal, but so did a guy named Osborne years ago and numerous other coaches. Not everyone's Bowden. Bo shows up. He may not answer every question but he's answering more and so far this year we haven't had a “What do you think?'' moment, though I probably just jinxed it. I agree with your premise, Mike, and I think Bo lives up to his end of it, generally, especially compared to other places, including Texas, which is not nearly as media friendly as you might think. Nebraskans get three times the coverage of their team as Iowans do, because the Hawks do it another way.

You know, I always felt Shawn Watson was one of the top coordinators in the business. I still feel that way and last year's issues were largely due to quarterback problems and injuries. Watson is good. Very good or he wouldn't have remained here after the Callahan regime got axed. That being said ... I think if he has a big year this year he leaves. Goes to Illinois. What say you? (Ron Zook would obviously be ousted, of course).

Like I said, coordinators — and all coaches — are only as good as their talent, and this is especially true in college sports, where X's and O's don't win games. If Nebraska has an offense like the one in the Holiday Bowl, the Huskers are going to win a lot of games and Watson's star might shine again. Illinois? Who knows where?

Why not use all top 3 Husker QBs at the same time, since they are reportedly so close? Instead of the Wildcat, call it the Wilddog — Zac Lee in the shotgun, with Green and Martinez each side of him, and Helu or Burkhead spread wide to either side. Hike to any of them — might be several options from there.

I don't think you'll see three QB's in there at once, but I could see two. I think that will happen.

I know you've seen a lot of this but the regular season finale after this year has to be a biggie. Is the nation interested in a Husker-Hawkeye matchup? I'm not. Give us a Husker-Nittany Lion game. Both teams have tradition going back generations, there's some history between the two teams and, frankly, Iowa just doesn't excite me. Obviously, you don't make schedules but wouldn't the Big Ten want a game that would excite Nebraskans, too? Surely they aren't so Big 12-ish that they will ignore our wishes. Are they?

As I learned rather abruptly at the Big Ten football kickoff, the Big Ten isn't about what the nation thinks or wants. The Big Ten is about what's best for the Big Ten. And that might just mean Nebraska vs. Iowa. Stay tuned.

As ever the situation improved when the conditions allowed but not until Callum MacBurnie held his width and scored four tries in the final game of the season did the piano players outshine the piano movers.

And if the evidence of last Saturday’s demoralising home defeat to Esher is anything to go by, normal service appears to have been resumed this term. Once more the scrum was on top but alas the same could not be said for those stood outside it and Moseley lost 29-17.

There is, however, a new name over the door and a pretty famous one at that. Kevin Maggs has arrived at Billesley Common following the departure of Don Caskie, the Anglo-Scot who has thrown his lot in with Georgia.

Caskie bore the brunt of much supporter frustration during the deep midwinter and having already turned down one life-changing offer, to join Andy Keast in Durban, the chance to partner his one-time mentor Richie Dixon in Tbilisi was too attractive to reject.

And so Maggs, who might otherwise have been coaching and playing with rivals Rotherham, has brought his enormous experience from Clifton Lane to Birmingham.

Maggs’ CV is not to be sniffed at. The 36-year-old Bristolian has played 70 times for Ireland, courtesy of his Limerick-born grandfather, often alongside the legendary Brian O’Driscoll in a partnership that combined silk and steel to dramatic effect. Safe to say, the silk was around the Hand of BO’D.

Most of his club rugby was spent at Bath and Bristol although it was with the Titans that he first began to straddle both sides of the white line.

Coaching is where Maggs’ future lies and if the way he and Craig West inspired Rotherham in last season’s play-offs is anything to go by, it should be a bright one.

Though Movalistas expecting a dramatic change in style should not expect the sort of bull in a china shop approach that so characterised Maggs’ best playing days.

“I have got a lot to learn about everyone and the systems that are already in place before I start to tweak and put my slant on things,” he says. “We have a good bunch of guys and good team spirit so at this stage it’s about making us smarter rather than radically different.

“I would not say we were necessarily porous through the centres against Esher, they came through once or twice but it was not directly the centres’ fault.

“One was a system thing where we were too tight and had too many people in the break down, which left them with numbers over. We can look at that.”

Moseley also put themselves under pressure out wide through injudicious kicking – another area both Maggs and Smith will have to eliminate if the mistakes of the previous campaign are not to be repeated.

And of course there is an option open to Maggs that Caskie could not take – he could pick himself. Smith seems reluctant to go down that route just yet, though his new assistant hardly balks at the idea.

“I would be lying if I said I did not miss playing. But for now we have got boys in the squad to put things right.

“And the way I came in late, only three or four weeks ago, means it is better to go with the lads we have got. We’ll have to see what happens down the line.”

MacBurnie in particular, who has tremendous potential but is as raw as frozen sushi, would benefit enormously from playing alongside a man who has appeared in two World Cups and won a Triple Crown. “I am confident we can get over the issues we had on Saturday,” Maggs maintains. “I don’t like losing at anything, let alone rugby on a Saturday because everything is geared towards that.

“The backs are a new unit learning to work together but I will want them to play with confidence and take people on knowing the rest of the guys are going to support them.

“I want them to be confrontational in defence and challenge themselves all the time by playing a good brand of rugby.

“But we have also got to be sensible and do the percentage stuff that, I know all too well, wins games.”

Get the Moseley backs doing that and the horrors of last season will be soon forgotten and MacBurnie and his colleagues could fulfil their potential.

Michael F. McManus, Jr., a lifelong resident of the Detroit area, died August 22, 2010, at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. He was 80 years old. Mike was born August 4, 1930, in Detroit, to Margaret (nee Hayes) and Michael F. McManus, Sr. Mike was a graduate of U of D High School and University of Detroit College. He was a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force Reserves.

In 1963, Mike founded Header Products, a parts supplier to the automotive industry, headquartered in Romulus, Michigan with a branch plant in Rose City, Michigan. Mike started his company with an investment of $2,000, and through hard work and his Irish drive, developed it into a multimillion dollar business. Mike attributed the success of his company to his loyal and dedicated employees and had a special way of showing his appreciation. Along with providing company benefits such as health and retirement plans, bonuses, and an annual Christmas party, he would also take all employees and their families on exciting trips to places like Florida, Toronto and Chicago. Mike was not only rewarding his employees but was also exposing them to areas of the country most hadn’t seen, along with the cultures unique to different cities.

Mike founded the McManus Distinguished Business Lecture Series, administered by the School of Business at Madonna University, in honor of his father who was an entrepreneur and true inspiration to Mike. A former board member at Madonna, Mike’s idea was to encourage and motivate young people about the possibilities of having good careers in Detroit, a city he was very proud of. He approached many distinguished business leaders including Tom Monaghan, Tom Murphy and Bob Lutz, and conv i n c e d them that since they made it big in Detroit they should give something back to the city. The forum was the Lecture Series, where interesting speeches were presented to students of Madonna University in the hopes of creating future entrepreneurs.

Mike loved the outdoors and maintained a summer home at L’Arbre Croche in Harbor Springs. He was active in sports and had a real love for golf, football, tennis and handball, at all of which he was a better than average player. Mike was a member of the Detroit Athletic Club, Detroit Golf Club, Birmingham Tennis Club and Stonycroft Hills Golf Club in Bloomfield Hills. He was also a longtime member and usher at Holy Name Church in Birmingham.

Mike is survived by his loving and supportive wife, Raenette and sisters, Mary Anne Harahan, Patricia (the late Patrick) Cogan and Sally (Philip) Klein Savage. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, friends and business associates.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Church, 630 Harmon Street, Birmingham, Friday, Aug. 27, at 11am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10:30am. Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Thursday 3-8pm. A prayer service will be held at 7pm. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Birmingham.

Things to Think About Before Acquiring a Rabbit

Rabbits have been popularly kept as pets in Western nations since the 1800s. Rabbits can adjust well to indoor life, and can even be litter box trained. Like all pets, rabbits need a considerable amount of care and attention.

Often people purchase rabbits from a breeder. Many people prefer breeders under suspicion that some pet stores sell cross bred rabbits. Such a breeder who has a litter of young rabbits available for sale can be found in the newspaper classified ads listed under “Pets” or “Livestock.” Some can be found through rabbit breeders’ club publications or through rabbit-related magazines, which often include a breeder listing. With the advent of the Internet, many breeders advertise their stock online.

Finding a local rabbit breeder is generally preferred to shipping rabbits for long distances, as it can be stressful for the animal. Many pet shops nearly always carry smaller breeds of rabbit such as the Netherland dwarf, the Holland lop, and the Mini-Rex. These breeds, although smaller than ‘normal’ rabbits, still live long and healthy lives. A point to note is that often smaller breeds of rabbits are prone to tooth problems such as malocclusion.

Rabbit rescue organizations or a local humane society are increasingly common places to find adult rabbits, who may already be spayed or neutered and docile from handling. Though most rescued rabbits are healthy, some may require special care for health conditions or behavioral problems resulting from prior abuse.

Training and Play

Pet rabbits can be trained to urinate and defecate in a litter box or on a newspaper in a specific corner of a room. The litter box may also be placed inside the rabbit’s cage or the rabbit can be trained to treat the cage itself as the litter box. Litter training becomes much easier once a rabbit is spayed or neutered.

Rabbits cannot learn voice commands like a dog, but can recognize different patterns of the voice. For instance, If a rabbit is disobeying, for example biting, simply make a high pitched noise, or an extremely bass noise and the message will be conveyed. Rabbits can be taught their names, although they recognize the pattern of the noises more then the words. Rabbits are intelligent, and enjoy games and toys.

It is possible to permit a rabbit to run loose in the home if rooms have been rabbit-proofed (i.e. dangerous chewable items such as electric cords are removed from the pet’s reach). Rabbits have a tendency to chew on items in their space, particularly wires, although they can be trained not to chew.

It is important that if a rabbit is allowed to roam in a house that it be impossible for the rabbit to chew or get into dangerous or valuable items. They do not possess the same comprehension as a dog or a cat, and often don’t understand if punished physically; rather they will become scared or confused if some kind of punishment is used, as they do not see the damage they have done. If all this is taken into consideration, rabbits make excellent house pets.

Companionship

Other rabbits

Unneutered rabbits frequently fight when paired with another rabbit of the same gender. Generally fighting is a result of sexual mounting, which is engaged in by rabbits of both sexes upon other rabbits of either sex; this behavior stresses the rabbit being mounted and can make it aggressive toward its cagemate. Unneutered rabbits of opposite sexes will breed rapidly, so a pet owner should not leave them together, even if they do not fight.

Because of these problems, it used to be preferred to keep rabbits caged individually. However, it is becoming common to spay and neuter pet rabbits allowing male and female rabbits to live together. Fighting can result even from pairing altered rabbits. Keeping rabbits in pairs can limit behavioral problems (such as general aggression, biting or withdrawal) which may arise if rabbits are kept single.

Pairs of bonded and desexed rabbits, usually one of each gender to a pair, can often be adopted from animal shelters. These have usually already had all their major expenses taken care of (desexing) and they will rarely fight or harass each other, taking the trouble out of bonding two separate rabbits.

Guinea Pigs

Some books recommend keeping rabbits and Guinea Pigs together to meet their social needs. While some people have seen success with this technique, the current consensus is that rabbits should never be kept in the same cage with guinea pigs. A rabbit can easily harass or injure a guinea pig; this can lead to severe distress or even death for the guinea pig. It may be unintentional or due to being startled, since the rabbit is larger and stronger so can seriously injure a guinea pig. They also have differing nutritional requirements, so it is therefore preferable that rabbits and guinea pigs are fed separately. Guinea pigs require additional Vitamin C in their diets that rabbits don’t. Lack of Vitamin C may lead to scurvy.

Additionally, guinea pigs typically show very little interest in social activities necessary for the rabbit’s well-being, such as grooming; this limits the intended benefit of housing the guinea pig and rabbit together in the first place.

Dogs and cats

It is generally recommended that dogs should never be left alone with rabbits as their predatory instincts (or overenthusiastic play) can lead to the dog attacking the rabbit spontaneously. Cats, on the other hand, can become close and safe potential companions if properly introduced to the rabbit and they are of at least roughly equivalent size. In fact, when the cat is introduced in a home with a resident rabbit, the rabbit sometimes will act aggressively to establish his territory and the cat, which does not have such concerns, will typically cede the point to the resident.
